Areas of Interest

Research - My dissertation explores how the artifacts produced by medical imaging technologies create a data stream that replaces the corporal patient, shifting the physician’s focus from the exterior to the interior body and from the whole person to organ systems, anatomy, and physiology. I study this shifted focus using methodologies derived from surrealist, literary, and theater theories to address practical issues within the field of radiology. The project takes a rhetorical approach to examine the artifacts produced by the technologies - the MRI scan or medical record, for example - and the processes by which those artifacts come into existence.

Other areas of interest include the use of digital visual presentations in business, how medical technologies shape cultural views of normalcy, and principles of visual design for print and electronic media. During my coursework in the Texts and Technology doctorate program, I have studied an array of subjects, including the following:

  • Media convergence
  • Visual presentation of information
  • History and theories of texts and digital media
  • Online instruction and training
  • Academic research methods
  • Technical writing
  • Gender issues relating to science and technology

Writing - Above all, I am interested in communicating ideas through writing. In addition to academic endeavors, I am interested in fiction - both in the novel and screenplay formats. I wrote a full-length screenplay, Revelations in Plastic, a dark comedy about religion and morality in an age of plastic surgery, and a novella, Foodworld, published in 2009.

Technical - I have designed and built various business Web sites, including my own professional site. I have a thorough understanding of most popular office applications, in addition to MS SharePoint Designer. I use a variety of graphic design programs for document design and digital photography, including Adobe Photoshop and InDesign.
