Creating A Science/Technology Communication Program
Presented by Professors Stephen Zeigler, Lynn Koller and Steve Master
In 1985, the faculty of the Communication Program at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical
University re-structured the curriculum to toward the university’s strengths –
something any university program can achieve to its own unique advantage. New
courses were added, each designed to provide a specific skills set.
Science/Technology Communication brings scientists to lecture each week on their
research. Students produce technical articles for general audiences.
Environmental Communication students produce multimedia texts about ecology and
physical space. Aviation/Aerospace Communication
students learn digital and print journalism. Contemporary Issues in Science
emphasizes debate skills. Program enrollment has dramatically increased, and
graduates find that the skills they take to the workplace are in high demand.
The panel will discuss how a niche program is created and sustained.
